Jacksonville, Fla. - Congresswoman Corrine Brown today announced she will vote "yes" for the referendum to return the U.S. Navy to Cecil Field.
"After reviewing many of the opportunities before our community, I have concluded that bringing the Navy back to Cecil Field will allow us to shift the economic development energy to the Northwest area of Duval County," Congresswoman Brown said. "Along with strengthening our national defense, bringing back the Navy to Cecil Field will provide our community with thousands of good, high-paying jobs - and protect our existing Navy Depot jobs at both NAS Jacksonville and Cecil Field. This is a good opportunity. I encourage all of my constituents to join me in voting 'yes' for the Cecil Field referendum."
Congressman Ander Crenshaw, an advocate and supporter of the Navy's return, stated, "I have long believed that returning the Navy to Cecil Field is a great deal for Jacksonville, the Navy and America." Crenshaw added, "Bringing the jets back to Cecil provides us with the best chance to protect our NADEP jobs, bring a nuclear aircraft carrier to Mayport and grow our local economy - while also boosting our national defense by providing Navy pilots with a place to train like they fight. That's why I'm voting 'yes' for Cecil Field."
Adding to the bi-partisan endorsement, U.S. Senator Mel Martinez is also supporting the Cecil Field referendum.
"Allowing the Navy to locate at Cecil Field would help to fulfill a national security priority. The men and women of our military deserve first-class training. The facility in Virginia has been identified as inadequate for that mission," Senator Martinez wrote in an opinion-editorial that appeared this week in the Florida Times-Union.
